Samādhi takes concentration as its main focus, while comprehensive retention (dhāraṇī) takes mindfulness as its main focus. Second, samādhi is solely associated with the mind, whereas comprehensive retention is either associated with the mind or unassociated with the mind. Third, initial cultivation is named samādhi, while long practice is named comprehensive retention; just as habitual desire that remains uncorrected is spoken of as one's nature. Fourth, root and branch differ: samādhi is the root; when samādhi unites with the real mark and produces merits, this is named comprehensive retention, just as an unbaked clay pot can hold water only after being fired. Fifth, losing and not losing differ: when samādhi shifts to another lifetime, there may be regression and loss, but retention is never lost.
