The matter of fire is urgent. If one's body is inside the fire and only then recites the name, one would already suffer its harm; therefore, distinguishing upholding the name comes first, and clarifying encountering the peril comes later. The records of response and verification are not one: the eminent scholar Xie Dun of Guiji (courtesy name Qingxu), Changying and Lu Deng of Wujun, and others all compiled Records of Verifications of Avalokiteśvara; Liu Yiqing, King of Linchuan under the Song, compiled Xuan yan yi ji; and Wang Yan of Taiyuan compiled Mingxiang ji, all of which contain incidents of fire. Formerly, there was a man of the Western Regions named Zhu Changshu who lived in a thatched hut. Suddenly, a neighbor's house caught fire, and he was directly downwind. He thereupon chanted and recollected Avalokiteśvara; the four neighbors' houses were completely swept away, yet his dwelling alone remained. At that time there were youths who did not believe this matter, and for several nights downwind they threw torches onto his roof; three times they threw them, and three times they were extinguished.
