Third, the four propositions of combined and separate: the prose combines while the verse separates; the prose separates while the verse combines; the prose and verse both combine or both separate. Fourth, the four propositions of earlier and later: the prose clarifies the meaning beforehand and the verse clarifies it afterward; the prose clarifies the meaning afterward and the verse discerns it beforehand; the prose and verse both clarify it beforehand or both afterward. Fifth, the four propositions of unadorned and ornate: the prose is unadorned while the verse is ornate; the prose is ornate while the verse is unadorned; both ornate or both unadorned, wishing to alternate between unadorned and ornate to delight the minds of listeners. These latter five patterns are ways of varying and altering phrasing to turn the momentum of preaching the Dharma. Applying the previous ten forms and subsequent five patterns penetrates through all divisions [of scripture], not just the Lotus Sūtra.
