The *Vimalakīrti Sūtra* says: "Dedication is a great benefit. If one turns toward the three realms of existence or the two vehicles, the benefit gained is small. Now, turning this good toward the Buddha path, its benefit is great." Therefore, dedication is necessary. Moreover, turning this good toward all sentient beings is also called a great benefit: if the good is directed to oneself, its merit is small; if one turns the good over to others, since others are boundless, its benefit is also great. Furthermore, turning this good toward the true nature of reality is also called a great benefit. Why is this? If one does not turn toward the true nature of reality, one becomes attached, unmoving and unable to escape; it cannot be called a vehicle, and its benefit is small. If one knows that giving is itself the true nature of reality, then because the true nature of reality is boundless, the giving accords with the principle of the true nature of reality, and its merit is also boundless. Although forms of dedication are many, these three are essential.
