Some say: the first discipline takes stopping evil as its essence, while the latter two take practicing good as their essence. Now we clarify that this is not so: if the latter two took practicing good as their essence, then when first receiving the precepts, before having cultivated practices or delivered people, one would receive only one discipline, and the bodhisattva precepts would be incomplete. Now we clarify that all three disciplines take stopping evil as their essence: the first stops the evil of comportment, the next stops the evil of not practicing good, and the last stops the evil of not delivering people. Therefore, when first receiving the precepts, one completely acquires the three disciplines, but only later cultivates wholesome Dharmas and saves sentient beings.
