The sūtras present two explanations: First, expedient means accompanies the first three perfections; next, three perfections accompany the latter three perfections: vow accompanies diligence, power accompanies meditation, and knowledge accompanies wisdom. As for why they are generally called 'perfections' (pāramitās): first is temporal perfection, meaning the completion of the three asaṃkhyeya kalpas; second is fruitional perfection, meaning attaining the fruit of bodhi; third is purity perfection, meaning exhausting the true nature of reality. Each individual perfection has four propositions: (1) It is giving but not a perfection: practicing giving during the first two asaṃkhyeya kalpas; (2) It is a perfection but not giving: the other practices during the third asaṃkhyeya kalpa; (3) It is both giving and a perfection: the practice of giving during the third asaṃkhyeya kalpa; (4) It is neither giving nor a perfection: the other practices during the first two asaṃkhyeya kalpas.
