有三義：一、欲明菩薩行因得涅槃果；二、欲顯《法華》是究竟教，說究竟教既畢便入涅槃；三者、說《法華》竟便入涅槃，令時眾生戀慕，聞後一乘即便信受。

There are three meanings: First, it intends to clarify that bodhisattvas practice the causes and attain the fruit of nirvāṇa. Second, it intends to reveal that the Lotus Sūtra is the ultimate teaching, and having finished expounding the ultimate teaching, [the Buddha] then enters nirvāṇa. Third, having finished expounding the Lotus Sūtra, he then enters nirvāṇa to cause the sentient beings of the time to feel longing and admiration, so that upon hearing the ekayāna thereafter, they will immediately believe and accept it.
