There are generally two meanings. First: Śākyamuni, Mañjuśrī, and Maitreya, the three sages, were all in the assembly of Candrasūryapradīpa Buddha at that time, and the three sages heard the sūtra together. Now, wishing to let Maitreya verify it for himself, Candrasūryapradīpa Buddha is cited; with other past Buddhas, the three were not necessarily in the assembly, so they are not cited. Second: among the eight princes, the eighth prince was Dīpaṅkara Buddha, who was also in the assembly of Candrasūryapradīpa. Since Śākyamuni received prophecy from Dīpaṅkara, this uses the near to conceal the distant. Now, wishing to open the near and reveal the distant, it is necessary to cite the events of Dīpaṅkara; if other Buddhas were cited, the eighth, Dīpaṅkara, would not necessarily have been in the assembly, so they are not cited.
