If the long were definitely long, one could not compress the long to make it short; if the short were definitely short, one could not extend the short to make it long. Because length and brevity have no fixed nature, dependent on the short there is the long, so the long is called the long of the short; caused by the long there is the short, so the short is called the short of the long. Because the long is called the long of the short, the long can become short; because the short is called the short of the long, the short can become long. The reason why this is so is that, since the Path is non-dual, long and short are non-dual; being non-dual, long and short are unobstructed, and it is possible to compress the long into the short.
