From "The host of the Buddhas' disciples" onward, third, it follows closely upon the preceding to explain the section heading on sentient beings not understanding. Within the text there are three: first, it clarifies that śrāvakas do not understand; second, it clarifies that pratyekabuddhas do not understand; third, it clarifies that bodhisattvas do not understand. If even the three kinds of noble ones do not understand, how much less those of the six destinies? Thus words are naturally forgotten [as to them]. Furthermore, since the very first verse already clarified that the six destinies do not understand, here it only distinguishes that the three vehicles do not understand. Taken together, sentient beings of the nine paths—the three vehicles and the six destinies—alike cannot know the Buddha's wisdom. Why is this? The Tathāgata's wisdom is neither noble nor ordinary, and cuts off conditioning and contemplation; therefore neither noble nor ordinary sentient beings can understand it. Regarding the śrāvakas not understanding, it is opened into three sections: first, it clarifies that dull-rooted śrāvakas do not understand; next, it clarifies that sharp-rooted śrāvakas do not understand; third, it clarifies that even when the sharp and dull contemplate together, they still do not understand. In the first, "Their power is not equal to it" has two meanings: first, in contrast to the preceding bodhisattvas being able to understand with faith, here it generally introduces all śrāvakas, sharp and dull, as unable to understand with faith, and therefore says "their power is not equal to it." Second, it intends to clarify that dull-rooted śrāvakas cannot understand the Buddha's wisdom, and therefore says "not equal to it." The next two passages are easily known from the text. From "The sharp wisdom of pratyekabuddhas" onward, second, it clarifies that pratyekabuddhas do not understand. While śrāvakas were cited in full as both sharp and dull, pratyekabuddhas are cited only as sharp. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "Dull-rooted pratyekabuddhas do not equal Śāriputra and the others," and therefore there is no need to cite them. From "Bodhisattvas of initial resolve" onward, third, it clarifies that bodhisattvas do not understand. In the text there are two: first, it clarifies that bodhisattvas of initial practice do not understand, as in the text. From "Non-retrogressing bodhisattvas" onward, second, it clarifies that bodhisattvas from the non-retrogressing stage onward do not understand. It can also be opened into two kinds of persons: first, it clarifies that persons of the Hīnayāna do not understand, within which are śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; next, it clarifies that persons of the Mahāyāna do not understand, within which are the initial mind and the final practice. Together with the six destinies above, there are ten persons in total.
