三請二止則為五段。就初請文凡有二別：初、辨生疑；次、明正請。生疑之中前明眾疑，次自疑，如文。「而白佛言」下，申疑致請，則為二別：長行與偈。長行中，前申疑，次請決。就申疑中，前申自疑，後申眾疑。申自疑中，前疑今，次疑昔。

The three requests and two refusals thus make five sections. Concerning the text of the first request, there are in general two distinct parts: first, discerning the arising of doubt; next, explaining the formal request. Within the arising of doubt, first the assembly's doubt is explained, and next his own doubt, as in the text. From "and addressed the Buddha, saying" onward, expressing doubt and conveying the request, there are then two distinct parts: the prose and the verses. In the prose, first doubt is expressed, and next a resolution is requested. Within expressing doubt, first he expresses his own doubt, and afterwards he expresses the assembly's doubt. Within expressing his own doubt, first he doubts the present, and next he doubts the past.
