There are three kinds of people: first, those of superior faculties, namely bodhisattvas, who understand upon hearing the brief explanation; second, those of middling faculties, namely the śrāvakas, who give rise to doubt upon hearing the brief explanation, and doubt is a stepping stone to understanding, making them fit to hear the detailed explanation; third, those of inferior faculties, referring to the group of five thousand, who upon hearing the brief explanation remain totally uncomprehending, but upon hearing the detailed explanation would give rise to doubt and slander. There are also three grades of people: first, those who hear neither the detailed nor the brief, referring to the lower grade of people; second, those who hear the brief but do not hear the detailed, referring to the middle grade of people; third, those who hear both the detailed and the brief, referring to the upper grade of people.
