「諸有所作常為一事」者，上明說於一理、為教一人，據口業也。今明諸有所作者，謂動靜四儀及以三業一切所作，皆為顯一理、悉為教一人也。「如來但以一佛乘故為眾生說法，無有餘乘若二若三」者，所以有此文來者，為釋成上三句義也。良由道理唯一、道理無三，是故諸佛唯為一事故出世、唯為教一人，乃至諸有所作皆為顯一事也。此文有二句：第一句明道理唯有一，故諸佛依於一理但說一乘，故云「但以一佛乘為眾生說法」也。「無有餘乘若二若三」者，上明道理唯有一佛乘，今明道理無有餘乘。餘乘者則緣覺、聲聞乘也。緣覺乘為第二，聲聞乘為第三，故言無有餘乘若二若三。

Regarding 'All that they do is constantly for the sake of one matter': above it was explained that expounding the one principle is for the sake of teaching the one person, which is based on the karma of speech. Now it is explained that 'all that they do' refers to the four postures of movement and stillness as well as all actions of the three karmas, which are all to reveal the one principle and entirely to teach the one person. Regarding 'The Tathāgata expounds the Dharma for sentient beings solely by means of the one Buddha vehicle, and there are no other vehicles, whether two or three': the reason this passage occurs is to explain and consummate the meaning of the preceding three sentences. Because the principle is uniquely one and the principle is without three, the buddhas appear in the world solely for the sake of one matter and solely to teach the one person, up to all that they do being entirely to reveal the one matter. This passage has two clauses: the first clause explains that the principle is uniquely one, and therefore the buddhas rely on the one principle and preach only the one vehicle; hence it is said, 'solely by means of the one Buddha vehicle expounds the Dharma for sentient beings.' As for 'there are no other vehicles, whether two or three,' above it was explained that the principle has solely the one Buddha vehicle; now it is explained that the principle has no other vehicles. The 'other vehicles' are the pratyekabuddha and śrāvaka vehicles. The pratyekabuddha vehicle is the second, and the śrāvaka vehicle is the third; hence it is said that there are no other vehicles, whether two or three.
