These four approaches fully possess the three teachings. The Tathāgata, abiding on the ground of the dharmakāya, contemplates the capacities of sentient beings in the five defilements throughout their entire lifespan from beginning to end, which should be capable of hearing three kinds of doctrinal approaches. Next, manifesting traces from the origin, for the sake of sentient beings he expounds the three kinds of teachings: at the time of his initial attainment of enlightenment, he turns the fundamental wheel of the Dharma for the bodhisattvas; in the second approach, because they are incapable of receiving the fundamental wheel of the Dharma, proceeding from the origin he raises the secondary, explaining the branch wheel of the Dharma; in the third approach, converging the three to return to the one, he explains the wheel of the Dharma that gathers the branches back into the origin.
