Regarding these four approaches, each has three sections, totaling twelve sections of the sūtra text. The three of the first approach are: first, explaining that which sees; second, explaining that which is seen; third, giving rise to compassion. 'I, with the Buddha eye, observe' explains that which sees. As for the five eyes, there are two perspectives: First, discussing the five eyes in terms of the response body (nirmāṇakāya). Because the Buddha took birth through his parents' bodies, he possesses the flesh eye. Next, beneath the tree of awakening, he attained four eyes: because of distant vision, he possesses the divine eye; because of illuminating the capacities of the three vehicles, he possesses the Dharma eye; because of illuminating the true nature of phenomena, he possesses the wisdom eye; because of illuminating the realm of the Buddha, he possesses the Buddha eye. Next, regarding the five eyes discussed in terms of the dharmakāya: because of illuminating five kinds of spheres of objects, he possesses five eyes: illuminating internal obstructed spheres is called the flesh eye; illuminating external obstructed spheres is called the divine eye; the remaining three are as above.
