The five eyes have two perspectives: First, in the causal stage they are named the four eyes, while on the ground of fruition they are named the Buddha eye. That is, humans have the flesh eye, devas have the divine eye, śrāvakas have the wisdom eye, bodhisattvas have the Dharma eye, and the Buddha has the Buddha eye; thus, when the four eyes enter the Buddha eye, all are called the Buddha eye. Here, cause and fruit are contrasted, which is why it says that the Buddha eye sees sentient beings, rather than calling it the divine eye. Within the Buddha eye, discussing its five functions in relation to objects, there are five eyes, and seeing the sentient beings of the six destinies belongs to the divine eye. Furthermore, there is nothing the Buddha eye does not know and nothing it does not see; it also sees the sentient beings of the six destinies.
