The flesh and wisdom eyes receive their names based on their substance: using flesh as the eye, it is called the flesh eye; using wisdom as the eye, it is called the wisdom eye. The Dharma eye derives its name from its object: because it sees phenomena (dharmas), it is called the Dharma eye. The divine eye and the Buddha eye do not have a fixed way of receiving their names. The reason is that the divine eye receives its name in three ways: First, the designation is established based on the person, and its title is also derived from its meaning. Buddhas and bodhisattvas are called pure devas; born among humans, they obtain as a karmic recompense an eye faculty that sees clearly throughout the trichiliocosm; deriving its name from those pure devas, it is called the divine eye (deva eye). Second, it receives its name based on the destiny. From the Four Heavenly Kings up to the Sphere of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception, all are generally the divine destiny; born in those heavens, they obtain as a karmic recompense an eye faculty capable of distant illumination, and hence it is called the divine eye. Third, it receives its name based on its cause. As the Dichi lun says, all dhyānas among the three abidings are called divine abidings; cultivating and obtaining a pure eye in reliance on these divine abidings, it receives its name from its cause, and thus is called the divine eye. The Buddha eye receives its name in two ways: First, it receives its name from the person: 'Buddha' is a designation for a person, and because that person possesses this eye, it is called the Buddha eye. Second, 'Buddha' means awakening; thus, because this awakening is capable of illuminating, it is called the Buddha eye.
