This text introduces together the two storehouses, the great and the small, of the Tathāgata—all the various teachings of the two yānas, great and small, from the Avataṃsaka onward up until [the assembly at] Vulture Peak. Why introduce both teachings together? Introducing the intention of the Hīnayāna teaching clarifies turning from the small to enter the great. Bodhisattvas of dull faculties, who had not attained awakening in the past, only now receive and understand. Introducing the intention of the Mahāyāna teaching praises the direct-progress bodhisattvas from the Avataṃsaka onward up until [the assembly at] Vulture Peak whose great capacities matured early and whose sharp faculties awakened early. This merely serves repeatedly to praise the bodhisattvas' earlier attainment and to lament the śrāvakas' later awakening. It is not about the past great being an upāya.
