From “You shall become a Buddha” onwards is second: explaining the attainment of the fruit. There are eight fruits in all: first, the fruit of the transforming master; second, the fruit of the land; third, the fruit of the doctrinal gate; fourth, the fruit of the season; fifth, the fruit of the retinue; sixth, the fruit of the lifespan; seventh, the fruit of the succession; eighth, the fruit of the upholding [of the Dharma]. Regarding “named Padmaprabha (Flower Light),” the name may be established from the circumstance of the occasion. For instance, the explanation of the “Rebirth Chapter” in the Da zhidu lun explains that three hundred monks removed their robes, presented them to the Buddha, and raised their hands as a sign; upon attaining Buddhahood, [their master] was named Mahālakṣaṇa (Great Sign). Furthermore, one thousand devaputras saw the adornment of the Buddha land and generated pure minds; upon receiving their prophecy, [he] was named King Vyūha (Adornment) Buddha. Again, the commentary on the “Mark of the Tongue Chapter” states: “One hundred thousand billion people saw the bodhisattvas of the ten directions arrive and make offerings with flowers; thereupon they generated the [Bodhicitta] mind and received prophecy. Therefore, the kalpa was named Flower Accumulation (Kusumasañcaya) and the Buddha was named Awakened Flower (Puspābhijña).” Cases such as these all establish Buddha names based on circumstances of the occasion. When Śāriputra heard the Lotus Sūtra, he was the first to grasp and awaken to it; therefore, upon attaining Buddhahood, he is named Padmaprabha (Flower Light). ‘Padma’ (flower) refers to the Lotus of the Dharma; ‘prabha’ (light) refers to belief and understanding. Because the object and the wisdom are designated together, he is named Padmaprabha.
