Those of the two vehicles considered themselves to have reached the ultimate, so their ailment was severe; thus they were not yet able to attain understanding. Ordinary beings had no such affliction, and so awakened immediately upon initial hearing. In the severity of the three poisons, the noble surpass the ordinary; but in the ease or difficulty of believing in the ekayāna, the ordinary surpass the noble. Furthermore, many among these ordinary and noble beings were provisional manifestations acting as echoes, jointly promoting the Path to benefit beings, and stating their own comprehension in order to guide others.
