From "There was a great elder" onward is the second [clause], which next clarifies the weight of his status and virtue. In the world there are three kinds of elders in all: 1. elders of virtue; 2. elders of advanced age; 3. elders of immense wealth. As for an elder of virtue, three meanings are briefly clarified: first, having wisdom; second, having virtue; third, being pure and flawless. Possessing these three meanings, he resides at the head of beings and is called an elder. The Tathāgata is also like this: first, illuminating principle completely and exhaustively is called prajñā, like the elder having wisdom; second, all virtues being fully equipped is called the dharmakāya, like the elder having virtue; third, myriad burdens being eternally exhausted is called liberation, like the elder being flawless. These three virtues being consummate, he stands above beings and is called the World-Honoured One.
