Regarding "his wealth was immeasurable": this fourth [phrase] praises his immense wealth; that is, he is an immensely wealthy elder. Mundane wealth and treasures can bring relief from suffering and attainment of joy; the Dharma-treasure can likewise bring relief from the suffering of birth and death and attainment of the joy of great nirvāṇa. The complete endowment of merit and wisdom is "wealth"; its expending and use being inexhaustible is called "immeasurable." Furthermore, the full perfection of all virtues is "wealth"; differing from an abiding cause is called "immeasurable." "Having many fields and houses": the complete endowment of wisdom and eradication [of defilements], being able to generate the wholesome roots of beings, serves as "fields"; being covered and shaded by benevolence and compassion is called "houses." Furthermore, sustaining life is called "fields"; settling the body is called "houses." The Dharma-treasure is also like this: being able to nourish beings' life of wisdom is like fields; settling beings' dharmakāya is like houses; because what can settle and nourish them is inexhaustible, it is called "many."
