Second, 'promptly arose and pressed his palms together' shows reverence in outward form. Intending to state his expression of understanding and looking up at the Tathāgata to ask for his verification, he therefore left his seat to manifest his reverent sincerity. Furthermore, the preceding was joy in the mental karma; this is now paying reverence in bodily karma. As for 'looking up at the venerable countenance': by looking up at the venerable countenance, he was watching for a suitable time to speak.
