From 'World-Honoured One, I often dwelt alone' onward is the second: explaining his old doubts, namely supposing that the Buddha had bestowed partially. Losing the great fruit was because the Buddha conferred the small; hence he falsely blamed the Buddha. 'I often dwelt alone beneath mountain forests and trees' refers to the days when he was dwelling alone and contemplating, in contrast to the previous explanation of the time when he was in the assembly seeing and hearing. From 'and constantly had this thought' onward directly brings forth what was doubted. As for 'all entering the nature of phenomena': the nature of phenomena is precisely the true mark, and none of the three vehicles attain the path without relying on it. The Chapter on the Examination of Dharma in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā states: 'Those who attain the true mark are of three kinds, namely the people of the three vehicles.' The Great Sūtra says: 'Those who contemplate the Middle Way are of three kinds.' These are all the same matter; hence it says 'all entering the nature of phenomena'.
