Regarding 'safely made his way out': in the past, when he practiced the Path and managed his escape, there was no tumbling or falling; hence it says 'safely made his way out.' Thus the Sūtra says, 'I alone returned to the primal source, freed myself, and made an exceptional escape.' Furthermore, the Da zhidu lun says, 'The methods of escaping among the three vehicles are each different: like three men in prison, one burrows through and leaps over the walls, fleeing in fear, which is not a safe escape—this refers to the escape of the two vehicles. The bodhisattva breaks open the prison of the three realms, slays the wardens, and leads sentient beings out together—this is called a safe escape.'
