5.37

上文云「諸人今當知合掌一心待」，待後佛起定說法也。又經云「待處待時待人」必是後時事也。「然我等不解方便隨宜所說」下，此第二、明自取於小。明由我不解故自取小，則咎在己、過非佛。

The preceding text states: 'All of you should now know: join your palms and wait single-mindedly'—waiting for the Buddha later to arise from samādhi and teach the Dharma. Furthermore, the sūtra says: 'awaiting the place, awaiting the time, awaiting the person'—it must certainly be a matter of a later time. From 'Yet we did not understand the upāya taught in accord with what is appropriate' downward is the second part: clarifying that they seized upon the Hīnayāna themselves. It clarifies that because we did not understand, we seized upon the Hīnayāna ourselves; thus the fault lay in ourselves and the error was not the Buddha's.
