5.54

身子喜，從憂除故喜生，昔既疑悔所以生憂，今疑悔除故歡喜也。又據益物言者，前序迷憂，示我同物；今悟故喜，引物同我。又此二事並為引物，身子於聲聞中最為第一，取小失大既生疑悔，諸餘羅漢道劣身子寧得保小不欣大耶？

Śāriputra's joy arose because grief was eliminated; formerly, because of doubt and regret, grief arose; now, because doubt and regret have been eliminated, he rejoices. Furthermore, in terms of benefiting sentient beings: earlier narrating delusion and grief showed that he was the same as other beings; now rejoicing upon awakening leads other beings to be the same as himself. Moreover, both of these matters serve to guide beings: Śāriputra was foremost among the śrāvakas; having seized upon the Hīnayāna and lost the Mahāyāna, he gave rise to doubt and regret—how could all the other arhats, whose path was inferior to Śāriputra's, hold on to the Hīnayāna and not rejoice in the Mahāyāna?
