"The Buddha with various conditions": second, explaining the elimination of doubt. In the text there are two parts: first, four verses directly clarify the elimination of doubt; next, one verse concludes on the false and the true. The four verses have three parts: first, one verse expresses understanding of the prose where he independently established the thesis and spoke; next, two verses express understanding of the section of adducing proof in the prose; last, one verse expresses understanding of the section of conformity and agreement above. The first half-verse directly expresses understanding of the Buddha preaching the teaching; the lower half clarifies the elimination of doubt. "His mind was as calm as the ocean": as a rule, when things are perilous, false, and deceitful, the mind must be flickering and unsettled; yet now it was stable, calm, and quiet, and thus he knew it was not Māra. 'Calm' means as stable as a mountain and as vast as the ocean. Since the mind was identical with the mountain and the ocean, he knew it was not Māra; hence the doubt was severed. When Śāriputra heard the initial independent establishing of the thesis, he immediately grasped it; the next two verses adduce proof, as in the text.
