Taking those who have exited the gate and request the three, it is only two persons, the arhat and the pratyekabuddha, who request the three. The Hīnayāna explains that a bodhisattva, from initial resolve up to one birth away from buddhahood, has not yet severed afflictions and is still an ordinary person; hence being inside the gate, one cannot speak of exiting outside the gate to request carriages. The Mahāyāna bodhisattva has exited outside the three realms, and knowing himself not yet to have reached the fruition of buddhahood, also does not request a carriage. Furthermore, the three carriages symbolize the fruitions of the triyāna: the arhat and the pratyekabuddha, having reached the stage of the two fruitions, seek the fruition and do not find it, and thus request the fruition; there is no bodhisattva who, having reached the fruition of buddhahood, seeks the fruition of buddhahood and does not find it, and thus there is no bodhisattva requesting the carriage of the fruition of buddhahood.
