若以低頭舉手等善為此經宗者，聖人豈不解耶？則知意不在此。今明二乘斷常之心不能深悟不斷常法，但得仰信而已。

If the good deeds of bowing the head, raising the hand, and so forth were the central theme of this sūtra, how could the sages fail to understand them? Thus we know that the intention does not lie here. Here it is explained that the mind of the two vehicles, which is mired in annihilationism and eternalism, cannot deeply awaken to the teaching that is beyond annihilationism and eternalism, and they can only accept it with faith from below.
