Regarding the statement that requesting is explained in terms of the state of doubt: across both gates of delusion and awakening, there is in fact no requesting. Formerly, having grasped at the three, they perceived carriages as existing; upon realizing the lesser fruition, they therefore did not request carriages. Now, if they have comprehended and awakened to know that the one exists and the three do not exist, they likewise do not request the three. That it is now said there is a requesting is merely stated with respect to their state of doubt. The Buddha formerly stated that the three existed, while the present teaching clarifies that there are no three; the confused, taking the present absence of three, search for the former existence of three, and thus it is called 'requesting'.
