Originally, the elder's family estate was used as a metaphor for the principle of the Mahāyāna; since the family estate does not differ, one knows that the Mahāyāna principle is without distinction. It was only that while the two vehicles were seated in the Prajñā [assembly], their great capacities were not yet ripe; therefore it could not be stated that they were the sons. Just as the five hundred śrāvakas were seated in the Avataṃsaka [assembly] and it could not be stated that they were the sons, could one say that the Avataṃsaka is shallow and the Lotus Sūtra is profound?
