《毘婆沙》言一切聲聞開為三品，上根唯一人，以身子獨六十劫修行故；中根亦一人，謂目連也；餘一切聲聞並屬下根。今何故中根有四人耶？
The Vibhāṣā states that all śrāvakas are divided into three grades: of superior capacity there is only one person, because Śāriputra alone practiced for sixty kalpas; of medium capacity there is also one person, namely Maudgalyāyana; and all remaining śrāvakas belong to inferior capacity. Why then are there four persons of medium capacity here?
