8.156

大開四句：一者、緣覺果人但在三界外聞《法華經》亦三界外得記；二者、緣覺因人及聲聞因位並在三界內聞經得記。羅漢有二：一者、值佛界內聞《法華經》得記；二、不值佛，如〈化城品〉中明佛滅後羅漢生三界外聞經然後得記，此四句大判為言。

Broadly opening four propositions: First, those at the fruit level of pratyekabuddhas hear the Lotus Sūtra only outside the three realms and also receive prophecy outside the three realms. Second, those at the causal stage of pratyekabuddhas and those in the causal stage of śrāvakas both hear the sūtra and receive prophecy inside the three realms. As for arhats, there are two kinds: first, meeting the Buddha, hearing the Lotus Sūtra, and receiving prophecy inside the realms; second, not meeting the Buddha, as clarified in the 'Parable of the Conjured City Chapter,' where after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa arhats are born outside the three realms, hear the sūtra, and only then receive prophecy. These four propositions are stated as a general determination.
