「爾時大目揵連」下，第二、授餘三人記。又開兩別：初、請記；二、授記。請記為二：前長行，次偈頌。初請記者，示佛從修因所得，是故請也。「皆悉悚慄」者，三大弟子自謂已解大乘，而佛未為授記，三人恐所解非解墮增上慢，故悚慄也。又三人喜其所解，次至懼於未堪，喜懼交集所以悚慄也。

From 'At that time Mahāmaudgalyāyana' downward is the second part, conferring prophecies on the remaining three persons. This again opens into two distinctions: first, requesting prophecies; second, conferring prophecies. Requesting prophecies has two parts: first prose, next verses. In the initial requesting of prophecies, it shows that the Buddha [attains the fruit] from what is acquired through cultivating causes, which is why they request. As for 'they were all trembling with awe,' the three great disciples thought they had already understood the Mahāyāna, yet the Buddha had not yet conferred prophecies upon them; the three persons feared that what they understood was not true understanding and that they had fallen into pride, hence they trembled with awe. Furthermore, the three persons rejoiced at what they understood, but then became terrified of not being competent; joy and terror intermingled, which is why they trembled with awe.
