In conferring prophecy upon Maudgalyāyana, the prose first clarifies the practice of the causes, and next clarifies the attainment of the fruits. Within the practice of the causes: first, the practice of causes under a few Buddhas; from "He shall again make offerings" onwards, it clarifies the practice of causes under many Buddhas. Within the attainment of the fruits, all six fruits are complete. As for "Tamālapattracandana" (the name of an incense made of grass leaves, called here 'hollyhock scent'): within the fruit of the retinue, previously it went from inferior to superior, hence bodhisattvas were last, and next it went from superior to inferior, hence bodhisattvas were first; here, to show that bodhisattvas practice the Middle Way, they are placed in the middle. Furthermore, humans and devas are inferior in both form and mind, hence they are first; bodhisattvas are superior in mind while their forms have no fixed direction, hence they are second; śrāvakas are superior in both mind and form, hence they are third. The first five verses summarize the practice of the causes. From "In the land of Delighted Mind" onwards, it summarizes the attainment of the fruits: one line summarizes the fruit of the land, three lines summarize the transforming lord, half a verse summarizes the lifespan, and half a verse summarizes the fruit of preaching the Dharma. Two verses summarize the retinue, and one verse summarizes sustaining [the Dharma].
