The site of enlightenment completely encompasses both cause and fruit: first, that which in the cause is able to give rise to the Way is called the site of enlightenment, as explained above; second, that which is in the fruit is also the site of enlightenment: being unexcelled, open, and unobstructed, it is called the 'Way'; and this wondrous Way being that which the noble ones tread, it is called the 'site'. Now I shall explain it with four propositions: 1. It is the Way, but not the site: this refers to the unexcelled fruit-way. 2. It is the site, but not the Way: this refers to the place beneath the bodhi tree where the Way was actualized. 3. It is both the Way and the site: as explained above, this refers to the fruit-site of enlightenment. 4. It is neither the site nor the Way: doing away with the above three approaches, it returns to quiescence, where words are forgotten and thoughts are cut off.
