Masters of the Chengshi lun say: the first turn generates the wisdom born of hearing, the next turn generates the wisdom born of reflection, and the last turn generates the wisdom born of cultivation. According to the Vibhāṣā school, there are three turns for people of three faculties: in the first turn, those of superior faculties immediately awaken and generate the four aspects; down to the third turn, those of inferior faculties awaken and also generate the four aspects. Now, discussing the three faculties collectively, there are twelve aspects; if widely expanded, there are then forty-eight Dharma wheels: the four aspects of the first turn are the sixteen minds of the path of seeing, and each of the other two turns likewise has sixteen, combining to forty-eight. Furthermore, the first turn generates the faculty of unknown knowledge (anājñātamājñāsyāmīndriya), the next turn generates the faculty of known knowledge (ājñendriya), and the last turn generates the faculty of fully known knowledge (ājñātāvīndriya). Furthermore, the first turn generates the path of seeing, the next turn generates the path of cultivation, and the last turn generates the path of no-learning (aśaikṣa-mārga). According to Śākyamuni going to the Deer Park to preach the Dharma, gods and humans only realized the first fruit; it is appropriate to use the former explanation regarding people of the three faculties. If according to Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū preaching the Dharma, where all awakened to arhatship, it is appropriate to explain it with both the two meanings: the three faculties and the three paths.
