"Suppose there were a large crowd of people" is the second [clause]: the people to be forever ferried across. That is, the multitude converted by the śrāmaṇeras. Above it said that there was no wise person; here it clarifies that the people desiring to cross are numerous, hence it says "a large crowd". "Desiring to pass along this path to reach a place of precious jewels": when a bodhisattva arouses the aspiration [for awakening], there are in general two intentions: first, desiring to cross beyond the stages of ordinary persons and the two vehicles; second, desiring to seek unsurpassed bodhi.
