Regarding the tying of the jewel: the original purpose in expounding the intent of the Mahāyāna was not to have it received merely temporarily, but to perfume the consciousness so that it would not perish across kalpas. Therefore, [the text] merely borrows the time of drunken unawareness to illustrate the tying of the jewel; in reality, it was not tied at a time of unawareness. Second, the jewel of understanding represents the bodhicitta; that it was not lost comes to light precisely at a later time. Now, wishing to show that this imperishable understanding of a later time derives from the Buddha's conferral, it was spoken of with reference to the later time. Moreover, how we know that the tying of the precious jewel did not occur at a time of unawareness is that the jewel represents the bodhicitta: if he were completely unaware, how could he have given rise to the bodhicitta? It is only based on his later neglect and forgetting that it says he was "unaware."
