The two parables actually refer to a single time; that they are spoken of before and after is to draw out two meanings: The drinking of wine draws on the meaning that initially there is slight understanding and later one becomes confused and deluded. Although he later becomes deluded, the understanding is hidden within the delusion and ultimately does not perish, which is like the tying of the jewel. Thus, the parable of the wine reveals that after understanding, delusion arises; the parable of the jewel clarifies that even though delusion arises, the understanding does not perish.
