"Shook in six ways": this refers to two kinds of six. First, shaking at six times, which refers to descending into the womb, initial birth, leaving home, attaining the Way, turning the wheel of the Dharma, and entering nirvāṇa. The present [occurrence] is one among these six, namely turning the great wheel of the Dharma; hence it shook greatly. Furthermore, there are six modes of shaking: first, moving; second, rising; third, surging; fourth, trembling; fifth, awakening; sixth, roaring. Swaying restlessly is "moving"; heaving unevenly like scales or mounds is "surging"; ascending from below to a height is "rising"; producing a low, rumbling sound is "trembling"; bursting forth with a crashing noise is "roaring"; causing sentient beings to awaken is "awakening". Each of these has three [grades], making eighteen aspects of shaking. In the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, "surging" is further opened into six, meaning that "moving" and the others each have six, which makes six times six, or thirty-six. The present text briefly mentions "trembling" and "moving".
