These meanings are not analogous. In the past, concealing the true forms, he spoke of the Tathāgata's body as conditioned, arising and ceasing. Now he opens the gate of expedient means to reveal the real meaning; therefore he distinguishes arising and ceasing as the traces of the response, and non-arising and non-ceasing as the dharmakāya. But those who cling to the teachings grasp the traces and are deluded about the root; hence he opens the two bodies of true and responsive. By contrast, the small effect and great cause are not two dharmas, so they are not analogous to this.
