Second, it clarifies the suffering generated by external wealth and the five desires. Again, 'undergoing all manner of suffering in the present due to greedy attachment and pursuit' refers to the third kind of suffering. The difference between this and the above is that the former explains that greedy attachment to wealth is light, whereas the present passage distinguishes that the undertaking of pursuit is heavy. Both are sufferings generated by external things, divided into two because greed has degrees of light and heavy. From 'afterwards undergoing the hells' downward, second, it clarifies retribution in the next life; thus the three wretched paths constitute three sufferings. 'If born in heaven' is third, distinguishing the three sufferings of later retribution: namely, the suffering of poverty and hardship, the suffering of parting from what is loved, and the suffering of meeting with what is hated. These three extend to both humans and gods; therefore, the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra states that the heavens also have poverty.
