It is intended to demonstrate the mutual conformity of conditions and teaching. Clouds and rain moisten impartially, and grasses and trees receive without mind. If the moistening were impartial while the receiving were with mind, conditions and teaching would diverge; how then could there be comprehension? Thus, adducing mindless roots to reveal the impartial teaching may be called: the one who expounds the Dharma expounds nothing and indicates nothing; the one who listens to the Dharma hears nothing and attains nothing. It is also expounding like an illusory exposition and hearing like an illusory hearing: revealing the Way without words, and the raining of flowers where hearing is cut off—that is what this refers to.
