Second, white is the root among all colors, clarifying that the ekayāna is the root of the triyāna; therefore, based on this one [vehicle], three are spoken of, and three are spoken of as one to cause them to return to the single dharmakāya. The single dharmakāya manifests trace-responses to speak of responsive functions, in order to make them awaken to the dharmakāya; therefore, the first section takes the ekayāna as the root, and the second section takes the dharmakāya as the root. Desiring to reveal the meaning of these two roots, it takes the root color as its name. Third, driving the great cart refers to the white ox; the white ox symbolizes equal great wisdom, and because it is devoid of the defilement of the āsravas, it is called white. Although the text of this sūtra spans seven fascicles, its overarching principle returns to great wisdom; therefore, the white ox is cited as a metaphor.
