佛教雖復塵沙，今以二義往收，則事無不盡：一者、赴小機說名曰小乘，赴大機說稱為大乘教。而佛滅度後集法藏人，攝佛一切時說小教名聲聞藏，一切時說大乘者名菩薩藏，則大小義分、淺深教別也。

Although the Buddha's teachings are as numerous as grains of sand, if we now subsume them under two principles, nothing will be left uncomprehended: first, what was spoken to meet small capacities is called the Small Vehicle; what was spoken to meet great capacities is called the Great Vehicle teaching. And when the compilers of the Dharma canon after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa gathered the small teachings spoken by the Buddha at all times, they called it the śrāvaka canon; gathering what was spoken at all times as the Great Vehicle, they called it the bodhisattva canon. Thus the great and the small are distinguished in principle, and shallow and deep are differentiated in teaching.
