《中論》云「前於聲聞法中說十二因緣，後為已習行堪受深法者，以大乘法說因緣相故」。《智度論》云「阿難、迦葉結集三藏，彌勒、阿難、文殊結集大乘藏」。《地持論》云「十二部經名聲聞藏，方等經名菩薩藏」，而《大品》、《思益》、《法華》、《涅槃》此四經，皆對昔小秤讚今日大，則知一化始終俱明大小二教也。

The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā says: "Formerly, within the śrāvaka Dharma, he spoke of the twelve links of dependent origination; later, for those who had already trained and were capable of receiving the deep Dharma, he spoke of the marks of dependent origination through the Great Vehicle Dharma." The Dàzhìdù lùn says: "Ānanda and Kāśyapa compiled the Tripiṭaka; Maitreya, Ānanda, and Mañjuśrī compiled the Great Vehicle canon." The Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra says: "The dvādaśāṅgadharmapravacana is called the śrāvaka canon, and the vaipulya sūtras are called the bodhisattva canon." Furthermore, these four sūtras—the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā, the Viśeṣacintibrahmaparipṛcchā, the Lotus Sūtra, and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra—all contrast with the former small to praise today's great; thus we know that throughout the entire teaching of the Buddha's lifetime, both great and small teachings were clarified.
