The Tathāgata met the two conditions of great and small, and therefore spoke the two teachings of great and small. Although he spoke two teachings, it was ultimately to reveal the single vehicle. The "Medicinal Herbs Simile Chapter" says: "With wise upāya he expounds all dharmas; the dharmas he preaches all reach the ground of all-knowledge." Thus we know that the teachings have no divergent expressions, and the conditions have no divergent awakenings. Yet in contrast to difference, non-difference is clarified; since difference does not exist, non-difference also ceases. Therefore it says: "This Dharma cannot be shown; the marks of words and speech are quenched." If one clings to the two canons of great and small or remains attached to the single vehicle alone, these all become the two views of oneness and difference; failing to awaken to original extinction, one is not a person who studies the Buddha's Dharma.
