Teachings such as the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā primarily elucidate the Mahāyāna and secondarily touch upon the Hīnayāna, hence they primarily manifest the real; the teaching of the Tripiṭaka primarily elucidates the Hīnayāna and secondarily touches upon the buddha-vehicle, hence it does not primarily manifest the real. Furthermore, the teaching of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā fully and explicitly speaks of the buddha-vehicle, hence it primarily manifests the real; though the teaching of the Tripiṭaka elucidates the buddha-vehicle, it is still a concealed teaching, hence it does not primarily manifest the real. How is this known to be so? As the Tripiṭaka teaching elucidates actual birth in the royal palace and actual extinction in the twin śāla grove, and attaining sagehood from an ordinary person to become a buddha under the king of trees, the Lotus Sūtra therefore says, 'The elder took off his precious necklaces and robes and put on ragged, soiled garments, using this upāya to be able to approach his son.' This is saying that the Buddha in the Tripiṭaka teaching is clearly an upāya; hence we know that although the small teaching elucidates the buddha-vehicle as superior, it has not yet manifested the real. Of these four gateways of secondary and primary, three propositions belong to the Bodhisattvapiṭaka, and primarily closing the expedient and primarily concealing the real belongs to the Śrāvakapiṭaka. Other sūtras, in clarifying their meaning according to their respective teachings, have only a single gateway; the Lotus Sūtra concludes and unites beginning and end, fully possessing all four propositions. These are all a broad judgment made in one general way according to the chapter on 'Faith and Understanding'; the various sūtras have further different texts, and also have other distinct meanings.
